The First Responder Center for Excellence (FRCE) is dedicated to protecting the lives and livelihoods of first responders nationwide. Their education and research initiatives constantly shed new light on challenges to the health, safety and well‑being of firefighters, EMS personnel and other first responders. The ultimate goal is reducing line‑of‑duty injuries and deaths as well as occupational illnesses. The FRCE has contracted with SSIC on a number of firefighter health projects. These include an update to the Health Care Provider’s Guide; an evaluation of cancer among wildland firefighters; an update to the guidance for wildland firefighters on rhabdomyolysis; behavioral health focused work with chaplains; and a program evaluation of a novel customizable program designed to improve mental and physical readiness among firefighters.
