SUCCESSES

Since 2008, data scientists at SSIC Innovations have been applying advanced statistical techniques and data science including text mining and machine learning to successfully meet the most complex analytic needs of our clients. From national organizations like the International Association of Fire Chiefs to academic research centers such as the Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research to multinational corporations such as The Coca-Cola Company and Phillips Electronics, the data scientists at The Innovations Group are highly sought after for their data science and statistical modeling support. Recent success stories include:

  • Data Core for Large Research Endeavors.

The Palo Alto Veterans Institute (PAVIR) for research was awarded a large contract from the Department of Defense (DoD) to study methods to improve medical care for military personnel who suffer from PTSD.

The project’s mission was “Striving to increase the number of service members in need who can access, and hopefully benefit, from an effective PTSD treatment.” After a national search, SSIC Innovations was asked to serve as the data analytic team for this important endeavor.

The study involved eight large military treatment facilities and their medical providers and patients and required our team to navigate the extensive regulatory requirements of the DoD.

We successfully conducted systems analyses with clinics and individual providers, developed secure and user-friendly online data collection platforms, and designed extraction and analytic methods for patient electronic medical record data to test program success. Based on patient data, we also developed analytic models to analyze data from a complex cluster-randomized, stepped wedge trial.

  • Consumer Behavioral Change Through Data Analytics and Compelling Visuals.

EMS personnel are at high risk of COVID-19 infection due to their role in responding to health emergencies in their communities.

We were selected by International Public Safety Data Institute (USA) to analyze and create compelling visuals of their national survey of attitudes toward and receipt of COVID-19 vaccines among firefighters in the USA and Canada.

Working with their staff, we created a series of data visualizations and infographics for national presentations and efforts to encourage our nation’s heroes to get protected against the virus.

  • Text, Web, and Social Media Analysis.

SSIC Innovations’ data scientists are at the forefront of textual and web analysis methodology including both qualitative and quantitative techniques.

For instance, in a study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, we analyzed messaging from Veteran Services Organizations’ websites and print magazines about tobacco use with the goal of understanding how beliefs about smoking have been influenced over time.

The results of this study were published in the American Journal of Health Promotion, attesting to its scientific rigor.

We have particular expertise with data science tools such as the R-package tidytext to conduct content and sentiment analysis.

  • Producing High Impact Publications.

Our data scientists have published high-impact articles in the most rigorous outlets like the New England Journal of Medicine and Environment International. In addition, our work has been featured by a broad range of media outlets including…

One example of our work focused on the potent influence tobacco pricing has on the product purchasing behavior of consumers. We received funding from the National Institutes of Health to model tobacco pricing relative to prices in the general community where a military retail outlet was located.

We collected consumer pricing data from 201 military retail outlets across all 50 states in the USA. The results of this market analysis were published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association.
